Racenet lays – Saturday, July 2

Racenet - 01 Jul 2016

The Racenet analysts have put their heads together to give punters another tool to help them turn a profit on Saturday with the Racenet lays of the day.

Below are the favoured runners that the Racenet team have discounted as winning chances.

Venue

Race

Tab No.

Runner

Pre-post price

Reason

Rosehill

1

1

Foxplay

$1.75

We are not knocking the filly – we are knocking the price. This is a quality winter 2YO affair with four of the eight runners last start winners. It wouldn’t surprise us if any of the four took this out, so diving into odds-on at 11.25am in the morning is not the way we want to start a big day on the punt.

Caulfield

2

3

Longeron

$2.70

It was tough to find a lay at Caulfield and we didn’t really want to lay Longeron because he’s a tough bugger, but he is a last start winner and hasn’t managed to string consecutive wins together since mid-2013 – that’s three years ago! From his past three campaigns, despite being competitive, has only managed one win during each of them. We suspect he’s had his win this time in.

Sunshine Coast

5

1

Tivaci

$3.80

Admittedly Mike Moroney’s three-year-old colt is coming through the right form races but at the end of the day – he hasn’t finished in the placings from his past four starts. Meets a large field with several up-and-comers and a concerning stat is that from three previous attempts at the mile he is yet to run a place. The good barrier helps and Damian Browne is another plus, but at $3.80, he looks under the odds.

Morphettville Parks

1

2

Optimize

$2.90

Richard Jolly’s filly broke through last start to snap a seven-run losing streak but the market has over-reacted on that win as she steps into a race here with much more depth. Darren Weir, Hayes & Dabernig along with Tony McEvoy have all found progressive stayers which are well placed in this so Optimize is going to have to take another big step in order to make it two on the trot.

Belmont

5

8

Drupa

$4.20

Has only managed one win from six starts this campaign. Has had every chance too so he’s certainly found his level now. Does race on pace which helps his cause but our Racent Raceday analyst didn’t find a spot for him in the top three selections so we’ll lay him with a bit of confidence.

If Winx is now bigger and stronger as called by Waller, that is not good news for other trainers, a very good horse.

Winx

Winx to be fifth-up into Cox Plate defence

Chris Waller has confirmed the Cox Plate will be the fifth start for Australia’s best racehorse, in contrast to last year when Winx was third-up into Australasia’s weight-for-age championship.

“She’ll be ready to [resume] in the second half of August, and obviously we have got a long preparation to get through,” Waller said.

“Maybe [then] the Chelmsford and the George Main before coming down to Melbourne (for) the normal lead-ups like the Underwood (and) the Caulfield Stakes, but I think the Cox Plate will be her fifth run.

“Everyone will get plenty of time to see her and hopefully she can keep winning.”

If Winx wins her five likely spring targets she will emulate the great Kingston Town, who in 1981 won the Warwick, Chelmsford, George Main and Caulfield Stakes on the way to his Cox Plate victory.

And it seems a feat that is not out of her reach, with Waller saying the mare’s preparation is well underway.

“She’s in the middle stage of her training, she’s doing three-quarter pace work,” Waller explained.

“She’s bigger, stronger, we have just got to hope she can be better, if it is possible.”

WATCH: Hear from Waller

On the eve of the Doncaster Handicap last year Waller said training a horse as good as Winx brings with it a new level of pressure, so for now, he is happy to lay low.

“I guess now with her every race is a Group 1,” he said.

“We’re enjoying the moment, before the pressure starts to build in the next few weeks, as we start to gear up her work and get closing to trialling and racing.”

Australian Cup winner Preferment is also back in work, and Waller thinks the rising five-year-old has improved once again.

“He’s back in the stable as well. He’s developed into a really good horse,” he said.

“He’ll be set for the Turnbull and depending on how well Winx is going, we might look at the Mackinnon, possibly even another crack at the Melbourne Cup.

“We’re not sure if he stays the two miles but we didn’t get a clear look at him last year, he got knocked over.”

Meanwhile, Waller has four runners in the juvenile race at Rosehill on Saturday as he hopes to unearth another potential star spring three-year-old, and he nominated Octavian Augustus.

“He looks a pretty promising horse, he might end up a Guineas horse, but they’ve got to take a lot of steps before they get there,” Waller said.
