California Chrome

California Chrome will be racing for a $US7million cheque in his career finale on January 29

Pegasus World Cup coming to Racing.com

The Pegasus World Cup, the world's richest thoroughbred race, will be broadcast exclusively in Australia on Racing.com.

The inaugural running of the US$12million race, an invitational contest run over 1800m on dirt at Florida's Gulfstream Park, has attracted the two highest-rated horses in the world, Breeders' Cup Classic winner Arrogate and Dubai World Cup winner California Chrome.

It is the rematch that the racing world wants after Arrogate narrowly denied California Chrome in the Breeders' Cup, producing one of the most talked about races in recent years.

The two champions will have 10 other rivals to contend with, as high class gallopers Keen Ice, Neolithic, Shaman Ghost, Eragon, War Story, War Envoy, Breaking Lucky, Ralis, Noble Bird and Prayer For Relief all expected to take their place in the race.

The Pegasus World Cup is unique in that 'stakeholders' pay US$1million for a guaranteed berth in the race and is the brainchild of Frank Stronach, founder of racecourse and wagering business The Stronach Group.

The stakeholder then has the right to race, lease, contract or share a starter, or sell their place in the field. Stakeholders would then have an equal share in the net income from the race, through wagering and broadcast rights.

The winner of the Pegasus World Cup will claim a world record US$7million in prizemoney.

The race carries Group 1 status and will be the final start for California Chrome before he retires to stud duties at Taylor Made Stallions in Kentucky.

Racing.com will broadcast a 90-minute special produced by NBC Sports of the Group 1 Pegasus World Cup live from Gulfstream Park, Florida on Sunday January 29, 2017 from 8.30am AEDT on free-to-air channels 78 (metropolitan), 68 (regional) and Foxtel 529.

Bowman vs Oliver for Flying Artie ride

In a few short months he could be the leading thoroughbred sprinter in the world, but for the time being super three-year-old Flying Artie remains without a confirmed rider for the autumn.

The valuable colt's trainer Mick Price said on Friday that he hadn't spoken to the syndicate that owns the horse but said a decision would have to be made shortly between two of Australia's greatest riders in Damien Oliver and Hugh Bowman.

"It was always Damien's ride but the situation changed during his suspension and since then there is a different ownership structure, so, to be confirmed," Price said on Friday.

Oliver chose to ride Flying Artie last autumn when placed in the Blue Diamond Stakes and the Golden Slipper and he was aboard the horse when he was a first-up winner in the Blue Sapphire Stakes at Caulfield in October.

But Oliver was given a 20-meeting suspension, which was confirmed upon appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, paving the way for Bowman to take over for Flying Artie's most famous day at the races when he ran clear to win the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes on Victoria Derby day at Flemington last spring.

Newgate Farm and the China Horse Club bought into Flying Artie last spring and Price said that the new ownership structure meant a meeting was looming with owners over which of the champion riders will partner the colt.

Flying Artie already carries an international rating of 120, which places him just two points behind current Australian speed champion Chautauqua. But with possible victories in the Group 1 treble of the Black Caviar Lightning, Newmarket Handicap and TJ Smith Stakes, the sky is the limit for the son of Artie Schiller in 2017.

Price said he is delighted with the colt's preparation looking ahead to his first-up run in the Group 1 $750,000 Lightning Stakes over 1000 metres at Flemington is to be run on February 18.

A girl on a mission, I am starting now to see some of her fitness skills and she definately knows 98% plus and on track to whip butts.

She is a very determined young lady who has a point to prove and many are just waiting for her to fall flat on her face.

So she puts everything into having her horses fit and winning, a trainer to follow....Jim

Michelle Payne

Michelle Payne after riding Queen of Zealand (Image: Racing Photos)

Payne plans interstate training assault

Michelle Payne has declared there needs to be a nation-wide dual-licensing rule as the newly-licensed trainer plans an interstate assault for her charges.

It comes as Ballarat-based Payne is continuing her fight to send runners to all Australian states and territories.

And, with premier autumn carnivals all across the country coming up quickly, time is of the essence.

Payne is expected to meet with Racing NSW officials within the next week to again plead her case to race horses in the state.

But, when speaking to Racing.com, the 2015 Melbourne Cup winning jockey wouldn’t be drawn on whether she is confident they will change the decision not to allow dual-license holders to race their horses.

Payne is expanding her Nottingham Farm stable numbers and has just received a Fastnet Rock filly from the Magic Millions sale on the Gold Coast. But with the expansion process  clicking into gear, Payne's need to guarantee that her runners can race across Australia has increased as well.

"She’s (The Fastnet Rock filly) going to be in a position to run next year," Payne said. "It’s paramount that all options should be available.

"It gives more confidence to owners if it’s guaranteed they can race all across Australia.”

Payne’s newly-acquired gelding Spur on Gold is one of many she’s hoping to send interstate this campaign.

The five year-old races on Thursday night at Pakenham over 1200m, in a rush to get fit to compete in the Adelaide Cup on March 13.

“I’ve just got him so we’re behind time a little bit, he’ll definitely benefit from the run,” Payne said.

“He’ll race again at Ballarat on Australia Day, and keep moving up in distance,” she said.

Payne is also hoping to send her exciting filly Queen of Zealand to Morphettville for the Group 1 Australasian Oaks on May 6, followed by the SA Oaks two weeks later.

The three year-old hasn’t raced since the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes in October, but Payne says she’s excited by what she can produce this campaign.

“She’ll run again Saturday week over a mile and then keep moving up in trip as well,” she said.
